Engraved Gourds

The engraved gourds or “mates burilados” are Peruvian handicraft made from the fruit of the “calabaza” (lagenaria vulgaris). These products are elaborated in the department of Junin -central region of Peru, in a town called Cochas near to Huancayo. The tool used to elaborate this kind of handicraft is called “buril” (burin or engraver’s chisel) and the technique is known as “burilado” (engraving). The artisans design different motives - from traditional designs to very modern ones- on their gourds. In general, the daily way of living from Andean people is finely carved with the burin. For this reason the gourd is one of the most appreciated pieces by collectors.
